Japan Imposes Restrictions on Indian Mango Imports – A Setback for Export

Date:

New Delhi/Tokyo: India’s premium mango exports have hit a significant international hurdle as Japan has imposed a temporary ban on imports of Indian mangoes. This development, occurring nearly two decades after similar restrictions were lifted, has caused widespread concern among farmers and exporters.

Reason for the Ban:
The restriction follows a recent audit conducted by Japanese quarantine officials at India’s Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) facilities earlier this year. Japan maintains a strict “zero-tolerance” policy regarding the presence of fruit flies. The Japanese authorities identified critical technical lapses in the pest control and fumigation protocols during their inspection. Fearing the potential risk of pest infestation through these fruits, the Japanese government decided to suspend imports.

Effective Date: The Yokohama Plant Protection Association has announced that it will not accept any shipments of Indian mangoes certified after March 25, 2026.
Impact: This ban directly affects the export of premium Indian varieties, including Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, and Banganapalle. With farmers already grappling with climate-related yield issues, this disruption is expected to cause significant financial losses to the export industry.
Historical Context: Japan had previously imposed a similar ban on Indian mangoes in 1986 due to concerns over fruit flies, which remained in place for 20 years. The ban was finally lifted in 2006 after India upgraded its pest control and export infrastructure (VHT facilities).

Next Steps:
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and relevant government ministries are currently in active dialogue with Japanese authorities. Government-level efforts are underway to address the technical lapses and ensure compliance with Japan’s quarantine standards to facilitate the resumption of trade.
