The Government of India, via the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on 11th July 2025, has appointed Dr M.K. Ramesh , former Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences , Karnataka , as the new President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), one of the four autonomous verticals under the National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi, for a term of four years. Earlier Dr Ramesh had also served as the President of the Postgraduate Medical Education Board of NMC.
A distinguished surgeon, academician and administrator, Dr Ramesh hails from Mayakonda in Davanagere district, Karnataka. He obtained his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, subsequently earning a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), Edinburgh.
Dr Ramesh commenced his illustrious career at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, rising through the ranks from Lecturer to Head of the Department of Surgery . He later joined Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, serving as Registrar (Evaluation), Acting ViceChancellor from 2017 to 2018, and again assuming the ViceChancellorship on 11 February 2022. He has twice been elected to the Senate of RGUHS and chaired its Board of Studies (Clinical – PG). During his tenure as the Vice Chancellor in the 2022 – 25 block the RGUHS implemented a massive faculty and PG training program, covering 24,000 teachers on the Learning Management System (LMS).
In 2020, Dr Ramesh was appointed President of the NMC’s Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB), where he aligned policy with best practices nationally. He has supervised many MS dissertations, led multicentre clinical trials, authored numerous international publications, and held key positions in professional associations.
