Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) President, FIBA Asia President and MLC Dr K. Govindaraj met International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry during the 20th Asian Games in Japan and held discussions on various issues, including sports development in Karnataka.
Dr Govindaraj met Kirsty Coventry during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games and briefed her about the programmes and initiatives being taken by the KOA to promote sports in Karnataka.
He also explained the support and encouragement being extended by the Karnataka Government for the development of sports.
Invites to Bengaluru
Dr Govindaraj invited Kirsty Coventry to visit Bengaluru in the future in connection with sports activities.
He said Bengaluru is emerging as a basketball and other sports hub in the country and had already hosted more than 12 international basketball tournaments. He also informed her that the FIBA Asia Women’s Basketball League would be held in Bengaluru next month.
Watched Men’s Basketball Final
IOC President Kirsty Coventry watched the men’s basketball final between hosts Japan and South Korea along with Dr. Govindaraj. The Korean team defeated Japan 67-57 to win the gold medal.
