Surpur, Karnataka | September 29: A 46-year-old farmer allegedly died by suicide after consuming pesticide in Yadahalli village of Hunasagi taluk in Yadgir district, reportedly unable to cope with mounting debts and repeated crop losses caused by severe drought.
The deceased has been identified as Devendrappa, son of Krishnappa Tailor (46).
According to preliminary information, Devendrappa had availed an agricultural loan of approximately ₹10 lakh from Karnataka Bank, Surpur branch, besides borrowing another ₹10 lakh from private lenders. With inadequate rainfall and prolonged drought affecting agricultural operations, his crops reportedly failed, leaving him under severe financial distress.
Unable to recover from the mounting debt burden, he allegedly consumed pesticide and later succumbed.
The incident has left the village in mourning. Devendrappa is survived by his wife and three children. Family members and relatives were inconsolable following the tragedy.
Local residents and farmer organisations have urged the government to provide immediate financial assistance to the bereaved family, consider debt relief measures, and extend rehabilitation support.
Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the incident.
