KARNATAKA: Dr. S.C. Sharma, a polymath whose work has redefined the landscape of Karnataka’s cultural heritage, has been nominated for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 2026—India’s highest national recognition in the performing arts. A distinguished folklorist, educationist, musicologist, and institution builder, Dr. Sharma stands as a towering figure who has successfully transformed the state’s folk heritage into a vibrant, living social movement.
A Legacy of Cultural Preservation
Dr. Sharma’s approach to history transcends written records, focusing instead on the “living archives” of human experience—songs, oral narratives, craftsmanship, and indigenous tools. His commitment to this cause is best exemplified by his founding of the Kriyakalpa Folk Museum in the 1990s. More than a repository of artefacts, the museum acts as a research hub, preserving invaluable knowledge systems ranging from ancient agricultural implements to rare musical instruments.
His scholarly depth is further evidenced by his recent work, Nelada Kampu (The Fragrance of the Land), published by Karnataka Janapada University, which offers a comprehensive mapping of the state’s diverse folk traditions. In 2024, his lifelong dedication to the field was officially honored with an Honorary Doctorate from the same university.
Integration of Academia and Society
Throughout a career marked by intellectual rigor and administrative excellence—notably as the Vice-Chancellor of Tumkur University (2009–2013)—Dr. Sharma has advocated for an education system that balances science with the arts. He maintains that true education must nurture ethics, human values, and cultural consciousness.
His impact is felt tangibly in rural communities, where he has pioneered vocational programs in traditional crafts, sustainable agriculture, and food processing, earning him the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Award (2005) and the Babu Jagjivan Ram Award (2007). Furthermore, his early advocacy for eco-friendly practices like vermicomposting and organic waste management highlights his role as a forward-thinking environmentalist.
A Master of Music and Musicology
As a devoted practitioner and scholar of Indian classical music, Dr. Sharma is unique in his ability to harmonize the structural complexity of Carnatic music with the expressive spontaneity of folk traditions. His role as a Visiting Professor at the Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University further reflects his standing as a bridge-builder between academic musicology and practical performance.
A Vision for the Future
Dr. S.C. Sharma’s life’s work serves as a testament to the idea that culture is the mirror of society. By integrating folklore, music, and art into mainstream educational frameworks, he has ensured that the wisdom of the past remains relevant to the aspirations of the future. His nomination for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award is a fitting tribute to a scholar who has not only studied history but has actively shaped the cultural identity of contemporary Karnataka.
